Angelika Richter, born 1969 in Gladbeck (NRW, Germany), lives and works as a visual artist and freelance architect in Düsseldorf. Her artistic focus is on abstract painting and drawing.

After graduating in interior design (1995) and architecture (1998) from the Peter Behrens School of Architecture in Düsseldorf, she worked as an architect in Düsseldorf and London from 1995 to 2003. In 2004, she moved to Berlin and worked there as a freelance architect until 2013, before returning to Düsseldorf in 2014.

From 2012, Angelika Richter deepened her artistic work with courses in life drawing, nude studies and performances at the Enrico Pietracci studio and with Vessela Posner at the Berlinische Galerie and Aktsalon Berlin. From 2013 to 2017, she continued this path at the Freie Akademie für Malerei with Jens Kilian in Düsseldorf. She continually scrutinises her artistic expression and techniques and develops them further, including in regular free painting workshops with the artist Evelina Velkaite between 2016 and 2018.

Angelika Richter’s works emerge directly from the painting process – without a preconceived idea, sketch or concrete concept. Instead, she allows herself to be guided by the material, colour and the moment in order to intuitively engage with a new work. Every brushstroke, every layer of colour develops the picture in an unpredictable way. The gestural style, the intensity of the colour application and the dynamics of her movements determine the course, while forms and structures emerge spontaneously.

Her creative process is not only an intellectual, but also a physical, emotional and dynamic act. In an ongoing dialogue with the canvas, she reacts to what is suggested in the resulting work. This enables the artist to bring various aspects of her life – experiences, impressions and adventures – into a holistic expression, often with surprising results.

If a motif emerges, this only happens at the end of the creative process – as a vague suggestion or a play with associations. She wants to give the viewer the greatest possible freedom to unfold their own fantasies and experience individual emotions.
